Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Preservation, a non-profit organization founded in Madrid by Adam Lowe, specializes in the documentation, conservation and replication of cultural heritage through advanced technologies.
In line with this mission, in December 2024, the Factum Foundation launched a major digital recording project of the Ipogeo dei Cristallini, an extraordinary testimony to the Hellenistic period in Naples. A specialized team, composed of Pedro Miró, Otto Lowe, Ferdinand Saumarez Smith and Gabriel Coleman, went to the site to perform a high-resolution scan of all four burial chambers.
Using a combination of LiDAR, photogrammetry and a portable version of the Selene Photometric Stereo Scanner, the team ensured extremely detailed documentation of the site, digitally preserving every detail. In the coming months, the data collected will be processed and integrated into conservation documents, contributing to the protection and dissemination of the Ipogeo dei Cristallini.
The project was carried out under the supervision of the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Municipality of Naples, in collaboration with the Central Institute for Restoration of Rome (ICR).
A heartfelt thanks to the Factum Foundation for the commitment and extraordinary expertise demonstrated, which will allow the Ipogeo dei Cristallini to be preserved and made even more known to the world.
