The members of the Frankfurt Liebieghaus Polychromy Project were given the unique opportunity to contribute to the investigation, documentation and reconstruction of the sculptural head of the Medusa from Tomb C of the Ipogeo dei Cristallini.

On the basis of the analyzes and investigations already carried out in the Ipogeo dei Cristallini by the Soprintendenza Archeologica, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per il Comune di Napoli, in collaboration with  the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro di Roma, in February 2024 it was carried out on the original Gorgoneion, a complementary scientific investigation (FORS), high resolution photogrammetry and further archaeo-artistic analyses.

The objective of this important work was to reproduce the colored copy of the Gorgon’s head in original size, based on a 3D print in black quartz sand. The reproductive process will refer to authentic painting materials to recreate as much as possible the modeling and illusionistic painting technique of the original. The project is extremely prestigious as the original color scheme has been exceptionally preserved.

The Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung (Frankfurt am Main) also set up a workshop open to the public from March until September 2024, for the reconstruction process, during which visitors were able to closely follow the work of Ulrike Koch-Brinkmann and the she. The curators of the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung have also set up an exhibition on the theme of the Gorgon Medusa.
